One of my favorite nights of the summer in New York has always been Philharmonic in the Park, so when I found out that Vienna has essentially the same thing, I was really excited. Except instead of the Great Lawn in Central Park...this is in the gardens of Schoenbrunn...not a shabby venue. This concert was the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Gustavo Dudamel.
Arriving early enough to get a relatively good spot...along with everyone else
They let us cut through the palace which was fun
Unlike Central Park, the only place you can't sit here is on the grass...they take their manicured gardens rather seriously.
Part of our picnic spread...we did quite well actually...potatoes, cheese, crackers, asparagus, couscous, etc.
and birthday Sacher Torte! we actually made quite a show...people were singing all around us in various languages, and we thanked them with pieces of cake...
waiting for the concert to begin, and enjoying the sunset.
even though we were fairly close and could see the stage pretty well, the screens were useful for seeing closeups and for seeing the dancers.
some lovely waltzing to go along with the Strauss waltz
for the big finale they had little fireworks coming out of the stage
and then it was walking back out with the masses and getting home.
Such such a fun evening, and the weather turned out to be great so standing outside listening to fantastic music and hanging out with friends made for a perfect summer night!
